Would You Like To Register The Kernel Module Sources With Dkms?

I read a lot of manuals nigh installing NVIDIA drivers but yet having issues with this and tonns of questions then I need your aid to understand all this things one time and for all.

Then hither is what I'm doing trying to install NVIDIA drivers on fresh Linux Mint 17.i installation:

1. Detecting my graphics card:

Lawmaking: Select all

            gear up@prepare-H55-H57-UD3H:~$ lspci -nn | grep VGA 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GK106 [GeForce GTX 660] [10de:11c0] (rev a1)

so I go to nvidia site and search and download drivers:

2. then I make information technology executable
3. end mdm:

4. run information technology:

Code: Select all

            sudo ./Downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-340.65.run

And from this point all the hurting and agony begins...

5. Beginning of all this message appear:

The distribution-provided pre-install script failed! Are yous sure you want to continue?

And for certain I do want to keep but from starting time it'southward not looking skillful *(

6.

Would you like to register the kernel module sources with DKMS? This will allow DKMS to automatically build a new module, if you install a different kernel afterwards.

- Yes. Also what DKMS is and exercise I need that module?

7.

Install NVIDIA'south 32-bit compatibility libraries? (Answer: No)

8.

-> Commuter file installation is consummate.
-> Installing DKMS kernel module:
Error: Failed to run `/usr/sbin/dkms build -m nvidia -v 340.65 -k three.xviii.0-031800-generic`:

-> mistake.
ERROR: Failed to install the kernel module through DKMS. No kernel module was installed; please try installing once again without DKMS, or check the DKMS logs for more information.
ERROR: Installation has failed. Delight see the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may observe suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README bachelor on the Linux driver download folio at http://www.nvidia.com.

Afterward this fault I accept no option but to attempt install it again without DKMS. But that way also fails:

The CC version check failed:

The compiler used to compile the kernel (gcc 4.6) does not exactly match the current compiler (gcc 4.8). The Linux 2.6 kernel module loader rejects kernel modules congenital with a version of gcc that does not exactly friction match that of the compiler used to build the running kernel.

If y'all know what you are doing y'all can either ignore the CC version check and keep installation, or abort installation, ready the CC surround variable to the name of the compiler used to compile your kernel, and restart installation. (Respond: Ignore CC version check)

And I ignore this error, installation ends with another fault:

-> Kernel module compilation consummate.
-> Unable to determine if Secure Boot is enabled: No such file or directory
ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This happens most often when this kernel module was built against the incorrect or improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as rivafb, nvidiafb, or nouveau is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from obtaining buying of the NVIDIA graphics device(due south), or no NVIDIA GPU installed in this system is supported by this NVIDIA Linux graphics commuter release.

Please see the log entries 'Kernel module load error' and 'Kernel letters' at the end of the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for more information.
-> Kernel module load error: No such file or directory

I also get same error if trying to install information technology without without DKMS and when switching to gcc-iv.vi
